The Texas Senate races between incumbent candidate Sen. Ted Cruz and Rep. Beto O’Rourke has become more than a local story. The impending blue wave that Rep. O’Rourke could possibly spark in Texas has turned this race into a national focus. The implications of Texas going partially blue would be a signal that a blue wave could happen all across the nation.

If Rep. O’Rourke were to win the Senate seat, it would be the first time in almost 30 years that a Democratic had the position. Looking at the recently reported polls, O’Rourke is ahead of Cruz in the polls by a small margin. While the two points that O’Rourke has over Cruz does not seem like much, it means a lot to the people who have never seen a Democrat as their senator in their lifetimes.

For those with marginalized identities living in Texas O’Rourke’s win signals a change more personally significant than a blue wave.

“It would mean that Texas is changing,” said Jazmine Olvera a Latina Dallas-native, “We’re progressive in other areas, but this would be different”.

To Olvera, the election of Rep. O’Rourke would mean that Texas was being to accept its diverse population to the point of wanting to support them. She sees this as an opportunity for the state of Texas demonstrate its support for those who may not feel safe under the current administration.

Olvera sees the potential election Rep. O’Rourke as the potential moment of acceptance she has waited for. It would mean her state would care about her as much as she cares about it, a feeling that even been close attainable until this moment.

With the amount of support Rep. O’Rourke has received it seems like Olvera is not one wanting to feel accepted in Texas. To those supporting his, the election  Rep. O’Rourke represents the acceptance they are so close to getting.
